On January 16th, 2008, the Friends of Section III Wrestling was formed. It is the goal of the Friends of Section III Wrestling to promote the sport of high school wrestling in the central new york area. Wrestling is a sport entirely unique to any other. The physical and emotional equivalent is unmatched by any other sport. It is our goal to ensure that these dedicated athletes receive the proper recognition that they have earned. Some of the things that we would like to accomplish are:

  • Provide awards such as medals, trophies or plaques to individual championship tournament placewinners in order to recognize athletic achievement and bring recognition to student athletes.
  • Provide championship awards in the form of a plaque or trophy to the sectional dual meet championship team to promote teamwork and work ethic.
  • Award championship apparel including t-shirts, sweatshirts, and golf shirts for the individual champions to recognize their superior athletic achievement.
  • Secure a venue for the home of the Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame to recognize the lifetime commitment to team, community, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide an award to the overall Coach of the Year in Section III as a reward for their dedication to the athletes they represent and the teamwork required to achieve such a lofty status.
  • Provide an award to the overall Wrestler of the Year in Section III as a reward for their season long dedication to their sport, their team, and their community.
  • Provide an award to the team that displays the best overall sportsmanship throughout the wrestling season.
  • Sponsor a post-season banquet for all Section III Wrestling placewinners, coaches and parents. This would be a reward indicative of their dedication to their team, their sport, their community, and their family.
  • Award a financial scholarship to the wrestler that best demonstrates dedication on the wrestling mat, the classroom, and in the local community. The deserving athlete will demonstrate a commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and community.

In addition to the funding of these various needs, we see the organization as a vehicle for the promotion of the sport in general to include:

  • Working with local media outlets for increased coverage of high school wrestling events – similar to the outstanding coverage they supply to most other sports.
  • Assist in securing a long-term venue for our individual championship tournament.

Since the formation of the Friends of Section III Wrestling – we have successfully solicited assistance from a member of the Syracuse Common Council in our quest to return the Championship Wrestling Tournament to the Syracuse War Memorial at OnCenter.

At the 2007-08 Wrestling Championships, we circulated a petition to be presented to local media outlets requesting coverage of our sport. This petition received over 1,000 signatures in our two day championship tournament.

In the future, we plan to conduct various events to raise money to support our goals. In June 2008, we will be conducting our first fund-raising golf tournament in Elbridge, NY. In addition to registration fees, we will be soliciting sponsors for each hole, longest drive, putting derby, and closest to the pin. In addition to sponsorship, we will be raising funds in the form of prize raffles and general solicitations throughout the tournament.

In the spring and fall of 2008, we will be conducting a series of wrestling clinics featuring some of the top wrestling coaches in the area. In addition to these outstanding coaches, we will be bringing in giants from the amateur wrestling ranks to increase participation. These wrestling clinics will be conducted in a wide swath of the central new york area to give all local wrestlers the opportunity to attend.

Several of our coaches are active in local fishing clubs and have proposed a fishing derby with all proceeds to benefit the Friends of Section III Wrestling. The fishing derby will be held on a wide variety of the outstanding lakes in the central new york area.

We feel the our goals are very aggressive and we are well aware of the work and dedication required to raise the funds to meet our goals. We are all very committed to this organization and the goals laid out before us. To that end, WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOUR HELP!
