RICHARD KOENIG

Sherburne-Earlville Marauders

Rich Koenig came to wrestling at Sherburne High School after two years playing guard on his High School basketball team. He won section 3 and state titles in 1965 and another section 3 title and state runner-up in 1966, coached by Syracuse standout and section 4 champion Bob Smith. Rich moved on to Lehigh University where he won the Plebe Tournament in 1967, but finished his college wrestling career at Colgate University where he was runner-up at the EIWAs in 1971. He served as the assistant coach at Colgate with Curt Blake and then at Bucknell with Richie Schumacher. After a career in sales and marketing with AT&T, Rich returned to his first loves of teaching and coaching at the Middle and High School levels. He and Karen, his wife of 50 plus years, have 3 beautiful daughters, two of whom were members of ACC Championship teams in tennis and swimming. Having finished his graduate education at Duke University, his family enjoys what some describe as intense internecine ACC rivalry.
