ROBERT J. SMITH

Sherburne-Earlville Marauders

 

Robert J. Smith graduated with a BA from Syracuse University in 1957, and later earned his Masters Degree from Colgate University.

Smitty wrestled and lettered at Syracuse three years and was wrestling team captain his senior year. Smitty coached at Sherburne-Earlville from 1957-1968 with two years out, 1958-1960, to serve in the Army as a 2nd Lt. His record was 95-21.

His teams were unbeaten five consecutive years in the Center State League and Central New York Conference. Smitty coached four Section III Champions, two Intersectional Champions, one fourth and one second in his career. Smitty spent eighteen years in wrestling. Eight years wrestling in High School and College, two years in the Army where he became the 175lb freestyle and greco-roman Army champion, and eight years coaching at Sherburne-Earlville. In 1977, he received the 1st Annual Sherburne-Earlville Booster Club Award for contributions to S-E athletics.
