New Hartford Spartans


Thomas B. Pauley retired as varsity wrestling coach from New Hartford High School in 1995. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1959, he began his coaching career with New Hartford in 1961. In all those years, Coach Pauley has not had a single losing season. His overall record for his varsity coaching tenure is 279-95. He produced an impressive twenty Section III Champions, eighteen of whom placed in the top six at the New York State Tournament. His six state champions included Charbal Karrat '76, Brett Cook '80, John Pauley '81, Ron Vittulo '89, Steve Caruso '91, and Dave Caruso '94.

Coach Pauley's Spartans were ranked in the top 20 in the state for seven seasons from 1976 to 1983. He had thirteen Central New York League Championships and was president of the league (formerly the Central Oneida League) from 1975-1987. He served on the Section III Wrestling Committee from 1975 to 1980.

At New Hartford, Mr. Pauley was a teacher of Social Studies, English, Psychology, and Economics. During his free time, he personally took his wrestlers to countless summer Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments throughout the northeast. He hosted and coordinated several dozen tournaments throughout his career and was a key clinician at the St. Lawrence University wrestling camps from 1973-1995. In the later years, he was promoted to Co-Director of the program after Wayne Bleau stepped down in 1987. From 1986-1995, Coach Pauley was the coordinator of the coaching staff for the Central Division at the Empire State Games.

Coach Pauley's impressive accomplishments and contributions to the sport of wrestling span 40 years and he is still going strong as a consultant to the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill wrestling program. With VVS during the past several years, Coach Pauley has contributed to the development of more Section III Champions with more to come.

For anyone who has worked with or has been coached by Thomas B. Pauley, it is obvious he is one of the finest high school coaches ever to grace the sport of wrestling.

Coach Pauley is currently the Head Varsity Coach of the 2009-2010 Whitesboro Warriors. A dedicated coach and teacher, he continues to contribute to the lives and character of the wrestlers he teaches and inspires.
