William Kays

Mexico Tigers
Bill Kays has been a physics and chemistry teacher in the Mexico School District for 29 years, 27 of them as the wrestling coach. During his tenure the Tigers have compiled a 356-130-2 record, including three Section 3 Interclass tournament Championships, one Section 3 Dual Meet tournament Championship, six Section 3 Class Championships, and 18 OHSL Championships (12 dual, 6 tournament). His teams have placed in the top three of the New York State Tournament three times, most recently 2nd last year. He has coached 39 Section 3 Champions, 44 State qualifiers, 26 State place finishers (14 in the top three),one State Champion, and 66 Class Champions.

Bill was named the Section 3 Division 2 Coach of the year in 2014.

He has been a member of the Section 3 Wrestling Committee since 2000, and Brad Hamers Assistant Chair since 2003.

Bill graduated from Jacksonville University in 1975, and spent eight years as an analytical chemist before going back to Lemoyne College and Oswego State University for his Masters Degree and becoming a teacher. He lives in Mexico with his very understanding wife of 33 years Maureen, and they have four children, Conor, Eamon, Liam (member of two Sectional Championship teams), and Katharine.

As the record above indicates, Bill has been successful in producing championship caliber teams, and has elevated the sport of wrestling in our school, league, section, and state. More importantly, he has had a great influence on, and has helped many of our students that may not have finished high school to graduate. He continues to serve as a positive role model for our students and staff. He spends countless hours with our students in the Fitness and wrestling rooms, before, during, and after the season.
