Class of 2000

After graduating from Oneida High School in 1961 and Springfield College in 1965, Hugh Moyer returned to his college alma mater as a graduate assistant. Hugh began his coaching career at Springfield College, leading the freshman wrestling team to a New England Championship.

Coach Moyer's thirty-one year scholastic coaching career began at Proctor High School in Utica before moving to Jamesville-Dewitt. In 1971, Hugh Moyer took over the wrestling program at Lafayette, where he remained until retiring in June of 1997.

He accumluated over 200 wins in his ooaching career. His Lafayette Lancers were five-time league champions and six-time tournament champions, winning the Cazenovia mid-winter Tournament three times. Four of Coach Moyer's wrestlers are members of Section III's elite 100-win club, reaching this milestone in just four years of varsity competition. They include Mike Carroll in 1977, Jeff Vahey in 1986, Alan Jones in 1993, and Pat Grevelding in 1996. Six Lancer wrestlers reached the Section III Tournament finals, and in 1975 Mike Carroll finished second in the New York State Wrestling Championships.

Hugh Moyer is a two-time recipient of the John Arcaro Sportsmanship Award given by the Syracuse Wrestling Officials Association, and an four-time Onondaga League Southern Division Coach of the Year.

"I am eternally grateful to my high school wrestling coach William Fariel and to my brother Rick for his positive influence and encouragement.", says Moyer. "I had the incredible good fortune of coaching my sons, Jim and Matt, for four years of varsity wrestling....and thanks to my wife Norma, for her support and understanding. Finally, I salute all of the people at Lafayette who supported the wrestling program throughout the years."

The Section III Wrestling Committee welcomes Coach Hugh Moyer into the Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame.
