Donald New

Donald Wesley New is the son of Margaret and Wesley New. He has been married to his wife Debbie for thirty-seven years. He is the father of five children; Mike, Cadi, Jeff, Ben, and Maggie.

Don graduated from Cornell University in 1967. His senior year wrestling at 127 lbs, Don was an EIWA Champion and achieved All-American status with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA division I tournament. Later that year, Don was invited to wrestle in the East/West meet (All-Star Classic) at Oklahoma State.

Also in 1967, Don began his coaching career as an assistant varsity wrestling coach at Canastota High School. He continued as a volunteer assistant coach throughout the 1970's and early 1980's. He became head varsity wrestling coach in the 1984-85 season.

Over his almost twenty year coaching career, Don compiled an impressive record of 205-42-1. His teams won more than fifty tournaments during his tenure. Additionally, his wrestling teams won fifteen league titles, eleven class titles, and three sectional championships (1985, 1993, 1994). His Canastota squads took second place in the 1987 Section III Championships and third place twice (1986, 1992). He coached the New York State Championship team during the 1993-94 season.

Don had the privilege of coaching eighteen individual Section III Champions; Jim Mason, Nick Zupan, Tom Gleason, Michael New, David Palmer, John Tyler (twice), Tim Tyler (twice), Benjamin New (three-time champion), Terry Showalter (twice), Rob Buyea, and Dale Griffith. Under the guidance of Coach New, fifteen of these wrestlers went on to be state place finishers. He as coached three New York State Champions; Terry Showalter (twice) and Benjamin New.

As a father, Don was able to see each of his sons win New York State Wrestling Titles. Ben won a state title at Canastota, Michael and Jefferson were both state champions at Cornell University.
