Fred Brown

Fred Brown began wrestling in 1964 as a freshman at Baldwinsville High School. After a not very successful career as a wrestler, Fred chose to continue his involvement in wrestling as an Official. He began his officiating career in 1969 with the Syracuse Wrestling Officials Association.

Fred has been recognized as a top wrestling official at both the High School and College levels. He has served the S.W.O.A. as Secretary/Treasurer for over 35 years and has been the Secretary/Treasurer of the New York State Wrestling Officials Association since 1991. He was a member of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Officials for over 20 years and served on their Executive committee for five years.

Freds expertise has been recognized by his peers and he has been selected to officiate many championship events. He has officiated the Section III Finals tournament 33 times and the Finals of the Section III Dual Meet Tournament three times. On the State level, he has refereed the New York State High School Championships six times and was rated the #1 Official three times. He as officiated the New York State Collegiate Championships 15 times and served as Head Official three times. Fred has officiated the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships eight times, the Empire Conference Division III Qualifier 15 times and the NCAA Division III National Championships three times.

Freds efforts did not go unnoticed. In 2006 the National Federation of High Schools Association named Fred the Wrestling Official of the Year for New York State. In 2008 Fred was inducted to the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame, in 2009 the Blind Men and Criers presented Fred the Joe Schwartzer Memorial Officials Award as Outstanding Official and in 2010 he was inducted to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his lifetime of service to wrestling.

Not only does Fred have the respect of his peers, he has been a role model for new Officials both on the High School and College levels. He has been a mentor to many younger, inexperienced Officials and has taken pride in their development into top rated Officials.

A retired Civil Engineer, Fred lives in Cazenovia with his lovely wife, Lauri. They are the proud parents of Scott, his wife Nancy and Tracy and her husband Tom McMenamy. They also have three grandchildren, Tommy McMenamy (18), Jocelyn McMenamy (13) and Noah Brown (7).
