Benjamin New

Benjamin New graduated from Canastota High School in 1995 and completed an outstanding wrestling career; he wrestled for Hall of Fame coach Donald New, his father. Ben was a three-time Section Three Champion, three-time NYS place finisher and the 1995 NYS Champion. He compiled a high school career record of 183 wins and 13 losses. Ben was a member of Mohawk Valley Wrestling Club and represented the club on trips to Puerto Rico in 1994 and Germany in 1995. Ben was also an Empire State Games gold medalist and NYS freestyle and Greco-Roman place finisher multiple times.

Benjamin continued his wrestling career at Cornell University where he posted a record of 80-40. Ben qualified for the NCCA tournament twice by being the EIWA runner-up and he was team captain and a member of the 1999 Ivy League Championship team. While at Cornell, Ben was the 1996 winner of Russ Martin Award for Outstanding Freshman Wrestler and 1999 winner of Carl Almquist Award for Most Improved Wrestler. Ben graduated from Cornell University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

After graduating from Cornell, Ben returned to Upstate New York and started his teaching and coaching career at Chittenango. Ben started coaching in 2001, he was the co-varsity coached along with Curt Kielbasa for eight years and together they have been instrumental in helping Chittenango resurrect their wrestling program. Ben has coached multiple class, sectional and state place finishers. He has also been a clinician for Mohawk Valley Wrestling Club since 2002.

During the past ten years, Ben has earned Master of Science degree from SUNY Oswego and Certificate of Advanced Studies from SUNY Cortland. Ben is currently a volunteer-assistant coach at Chittenango High School, where he is an administrator in the district. He is married to Christina New and has one daughter named Alexandra.
