Matthew Stenglein

Matthew Stenglein wrestled for Colonie Coaches Andy Monin and Joe Guardino for 6 years from 1996 to 2001 where he would set nearly every Raider record during his auspicious wrestling career.

Stenglein would show the sign of things to come when as 7th grader he would place 3rd in the Section 2 Tournament at 91 pounds. Matt would be an Empire State Games Freestyle Gold Medalist that summer. He would then win the Class A Tournament and the Section 2 Tournament as an 8th grader at 103 pounds the following year when he set a new school record 36 wins during the season and would place 6th in the State Tournament.

Matt would finish 3rd in the Section 2 Tournament as a freshman in 1998 winning 34 matches and being named team MOW and would also be a Cadet Greco National Champion that summer. Before the end of his sophomore year in 1999 he would set the Colonie record for career wins (137) and wins in a season with 42 and also most takedowns. He would win the Class A and Section 2 Tournament and would go on to finish 3rd in the State Tournament.

Stengleins Junior and Senior year would produce his 4th Class A and Section 2 Championships and he would go on the finish 4th and 5th in the State Tournaments, placing at States in four different years. Matt was also a 5 time Suburban Council Champion and was MOW in 2001. He was a 2 time Mid-Hudson Champion and a 2-time MOW.

Stenglein also a 2 time Greco Fargo All-American, he would be named South Colonies Winter Male Athlete Award Winner in 2001. Not only would Matt set the Colonie record for all time wins but by the time he graduated he would be the first Section 2 wrestler in history to eclipse 200 victories in his career. He would finish his career with a stellar 221-25 record which would set the record for wins in Section 2.

In 2019 Matt Stenglein would be inducted into the Section 2 Wrestling Hall of Fame.
