Hello wrestling fans, and welcome back for the 2023-24 season of cnywrestling! If you're interested in what's new in high school wrestling this year, nobody could articulate it better than our own fanofitsince98. If you haven't checked out his preview of the changes, I encourage you to do so by clicking here.
This post is more about the future of this website. If that is not something that interests you, consider yourself warned before reading on.
As many of you know, the intention was to make my 20th year (last year) my last. A few years ago, I put out a plea for a successor to this website. There were a number of reasons for this. Specifically, 20 years is a long time to do anything. I also had major issues in that the code I wrote 20 years ago that drives 90% of the pages on this website would not run on modern web servers. Additionally, the look and feel was in dire need of a rewrite to better accommodate mobile devices. Research shows that over 80% of website visitors do so on a mobile device. I only knew how to write it the old fashioned way back then (think of the phone you had 20 years ago). Amazingly enough, there was nobody that wanted another 50+ hours added to their work week with no additional pay, so some decisions had to be made.
In the summer of 2021, I took on the task of rewriting all of the scripting on this website so that it could run on modern web servers. This required rewriting essentially every page here. It was something I absolutely did not want to do, but my web host was out of patience and I had to make a move. With still no takers after that, in the summer of 2022 and into the spring of 2023, I rewrote all of the pages to be mobile friendly. I do think the previous version was much more desktop friendly, but if 80% of your audience is accessing one way, that's the way you have to go. Now, you should find that you do not have to pinch and zoom on every page to see the data. There are still a few pages where you may have to drag left/right with your thumb, but this was more desirable than removing vital information from a page just so you didn't have to scroll. Also, the archives are a work in progress. There are literally thousands of static html pages in the archives and it takes several minutes to rewrite each one. Doesn't sound like a lot until you remember the whole thousands of pages thing. Those will get rewritten as time permits. As always, I welcome correction and criticisms at email@example.com.
So, where does this leave the future of this website? Well, with those two enormous projects nearing completion, this will allow me to conduct a more phased-in search for a replacement. However, I still have a desire to transition away from the daily data entry and just be a fan for a change. I have taken on a team on volunteers to ease the data entry burden off of me. Depending on how the team takes to it, there's a chance they could gradually take over all website responsibilities moving forward. There's also a chance they find this isn't for them, and that's ok. I can restart the search at that point. For now, I'll continue to serve as website administrator - with a little help from my friends. I feel every confidence this website will persist well into the future. My hope and my vision and that some of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit this website as the next generation of wrestlers and wrestling fans.
Enjoy the season!
